I’m so excited you are here. Your presence here means that you are a teacher, are going to be a teacher, or there is a teacher in your life that you love. Teaching is truly a work of heart and you have obviously lost your mind for all the right reasons.
Kids are quirky, loving, rude, confused, confident, insecure, and strange. Sometimes in the same class period. But this is why I wake up and go into a profession that challenges me to show what I am made of every day. To be a teacher, you have to be a little crazy.
Teaching has pushed every limit I never knew I had. I began teaching after receiving a phone call from a principal during maternity leave. Months prior I applied for a job, any teaching job that would allow me to not work 12 hours a day with a little one. The stars aligned and I was hired. I started the first day of the last marking period that year. I also had 3 preps of 10th, 11th, and 12th grade.
My first classroom looked like a jail cell. (I’ll probably do a classroom time capsule so you can see my classrooms). The classroom was for a group of overaged (like 19 almost 20 years old), mostly male, high school students. They tested my patience, but my resolve was determined after day 1 when they told me they would run me off and that I was their 4th teacher that year. They also said I was cute, but looked like I needed to be teaching kindergarten. (I guess that’s a compliment considering K-5 teachers need a ton of energy and I was sleep deprived with a newborn.)
I wrote this blog when I felt hopeless, burned out, and did not like the feeling of it. I wanted to renew faith in myself and in others that felt the way that I did. Through this blog, I want to make sure teachers have any tools I can offer, and that we have more amazing days than days of frustration.
I teach flames because the one quote that has always kept me going on hard days is “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” I want to spark the flame that makes my kids get passionate about learning. I want them to get a fire so bright they persevere through difficult days in class. I want to see them shine brightly when they succeed. My kids are flames, and I have the privilege to tend their fires.
